Assemble and assembly, two words closely tied, yet distinct in meaning. To assemble is to gather separate parts or pieces into a cohesive whole—an active process of unification. An assembly is the result of this assemblage, a unified gathering or collection of people, parts or ideas. In today’s world, the concept of assembly has taken on a new meaning. With the rise of virtual communication, we can assemble across digital spaces, unified through shared ideas and experiences rather than physical proximity – unbound by architectural limitations.

Our 4th Edition of the OneBeat Virtual Residency invited 25 artists from around the world to explore the relationship between assembling and assembly. How do we meaningfully unite people in both virtual and physical spaces? What are the challenges and opportunities inherent in each? How can we embrace the ancient, in-person assembly while utilizing new ways of connecting through virtual means?
